Since we suddenly have more unscheduled time on our hands than ever before, we’ve all dusted off our rusty skills (while dusting our very clean hands with flour) and started baking. It’s our new favorite pastime that’s equal parts cathartic and delicious, and we can’t get enough of it. If you haven’t joined in on the quarantine baking trend yet, or if you’ve baked through all your favorites and need some new inspiration, we’ve assembled some great Memorial Day baking ideas to get you through the upcoming long weekend. Just because holidays will look different this year doesn’t mean they should be any less celebrated (or tasty).
Keep it Classic
Few desserts are as nostalgic as certain crispy childhood treats, and we love how this version ups the ante with a more adult red velvet interpretation, complete with a fancy white chocolate drizzle. But elevating a classic sweet snack doesn’t need to mean making it complicated. With a heat-proof bowl, wooden spoon and your favorite red velvet cake mix, this dessert only takes 10 minutes to mix up.
Famous for her addictive and creative desserts, Christina Tosi has created Milk Bar a booming bakery business all from humble beginnings of milk and cookies. And you don’t even need to cross your fingers for a holiday weekend mail order to come through since you can make her signature Milk Bar Pie (formally known Crack Pie) in your very own kitchen! Gooey and buttery, salty-sweet and crumbly, even though this pie is rich it has a special balance to it that will make you crave it for the foreseeable future. And since it has oats in it, we say it’s more than acceptable to enjoy for breakfast all weekend with your favorite morning brew.
Have Your Cake
If you prefer to avoid firing up your oven (and heating up your kitchen) for a baking frenzy this holiday weekend, but still want to make an extra special, Instagram-able Memorial Day dessert, you’re in luck. This triple berry no-bake cheesecake is a winner in every sense of the word. It’s simple, refreshing and festively reps those red, white and blue colors. And it only requires 20 minutes of active preparation time! Other than combining and pressing the graham cracker crust into an ungreased pan, creaming the filling and sugaring the berry topping, your refrigerator does the rest of the work while you chill out on your patio.
Find the Bright Side
Sunny and all around yummy, lemon bars are such a great dessert to bake when you’re feeling the need for something sweet, but not overly sweet, and simple to make. A bit of “a cross between lemon curd and lemon meringue pie, soft and rich with egg yolks, but thick enough to slice into neat squares—no cornstarch required.” We’re here for it. Bring on the sunny rays and sugary days!
You’ve worked hard in the kitchen! It’s time to take a break. And there’s nowhere better to hang out these days than outside in the gorgeous sunshine. Take a deep breath, practice gratitude (especially for our veterans this Memorial Day) and prop your feet up outside on the patio. If you’re in need of a new spot outdoors to hang out and relax in for spring, our Graphic Outdoor Furniture Collection may be the perfect match for you. Graphic is our pop-art-inspired patio furniture done in brightly colored finishes that manages to be all things to all patios: contemporary yet retro, soft yet sturdy. Constructed from powder coated aluminum that’s durable but also lightweight, this patio furniture set is topped with luxuriously thick acrylic Sunbrella® cushions that are fade- and mildew-resistant, with removable covers for easy cleaning for when life inevitably happens. So grab a freshly baked treat and enjoy it while chilling on your new outdoor furniture set worry-free.
We hope you enjoy your holiday weekend. Many thanks to all our incredible veterans for keeping us safe and free!
