This year we’re all staying indoors more for the holidays, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be as fun and festive as ever. We have ideas for six ways to have fun at home for the holidays while keeping your family or pod of close friends entertained and safe this season.
Plan to Play
It’s all fun and games until people start to get tired of being home, so keep the boredom at bay and have activities pre-planned to keep things lively. Find options for the whole family like a Christmas Scavenger Hunt or Christmas Trivia, or entertaining adults-only options like Drawing Without Dignity. Having a few puzzles on hand is also great for filling time while playing a Christmas movie marathon in the background.
Use the extra time at home to tackle a project or create festive holiday décor. We love how Ashley Rose from Sugar & Cloth made this beautiful DIY wood lights Christmas garland for her front door. It’s a project you can include the whole family or friends pod in, and the end result is charming and lightbulb-free, so you won’t have to worry about replacing them next year. Blast some paint cans and have a ball!
Few things are more festive than the smell of sugary treats baking in the oven. Recruit your holiday crew to help whip up some delicious desserts, like these hot chocolate brownie cups or some salty and sweet Santa’s trash cookies. Calories don’t count during the holidays (or COVID-19), so grab the flour and sugar and start baking, and then enjoy your hard work with some classic Irish coffee. Cheers!
It’s been a tough year for everyone. But if you’re lucky enough to have everything you need and then some, this holiday season presents us with opportunities—not only to practice gratitude—but also to give back to our communities and make a positive impact. Food pantries need more provisions than ever, so find one near you and consider making a donation. Refinery29 compiled a diverse list of organizations supporting a variety of initiatives, so you can connect with causes most meaningful to you. Make an impact from your sofa however you’re able to—even small donations can make a big difference!
Look at Lights
When you feel the need to get out of the house, take a drive through local neighborhoods to view holiday lights! Many are noticing they’re better than ever this year with everyone feeling the need for an extra dose of holiday cheer. In Dallas, we have what’s been dubbed the “Santa House” where every year a University Park homeowner lights up the block with an impressive display of vintage Santa lighted figures, including a Santa hat-wearing Big Tex. Everything’s bigger in Texas, including holiday lights. Take a drive and explore with hot chocolate thermoses in hand.
Deck the Patio
Ask you deck the holiday halls, don’t forget about the patio! A simple string of holiday lights, cozy outdoor furniture, and plush outdoor throw pillows will create welcoming vibes for chilly mornings outdoors with a hot cup of coffee (and maybe some of those baked holiday treats). Our Novel 6-Piece Outdoor Seating Set is one of our favorites for relaxing comfortably. The contemporary patio furniture is made from durable, all-weather HDPE wicker that’s been hand-woven around a tubular aluminum frame. This modern outdoor furniture set also includes acrylic Sunbrella® seat, back, and bolster cushions that are fade- and mildew-resistant, come rain, sleet, or snow. Both the cushions and cushion covers are removable to make patio cleanup a breeze. Available in chic, neutral colors, Novel is the perfect base for fun outdoor pillows and outdoor holiday décor.
We hope your time spent at home this season is safe and bright. Happy holidays!
